Spiced Rye Aftershave

While we mostly advocate for drinking our alcohol, sometimes we feel a little crafty and the idea of making aftershave for gifts seemed like a good way to while away a winter afternoon. While you might be familiar with Bay Rum aftershave, we opted to make ours with rye whiskey, a favorite in our household.

A couple of fresh orange peels

1 cup witch hazel (available at most drug stores)

1/2 cup water

2 small bay leaves

1 cinnamon stick

1-inch chunk of fresh ginger

1/2 teaspoon freshly grated nutmeg

1/2 teaspoon vanilla

2 ounces rye whiskey (we used our favorite Roundstone Rye from our local distillers at Catoctin Creek)

Put the witch hazel, water, orange peel, bay leaves, cinnamon stick, ginger, and nutmeg in a small saucepan, cover, and let warm over very low heat for about an hour, which allows the scents to infuse.

After an hour, turn off the heat, then add the vanilla and whiskey, stirring it all together. Let cool to room temperature.

Strain out all the solids, then strain the liquid again through a coffee filter to get a nice clear liquid for bottling.

Pour into a nice clean glass bottle for presentation, being sure to cork or cap tightly.
