<p>We&#8217;re broke, Boozers. And by broke, we mean broken, literally. Using a cocktail shaker with one hand is no easy trick, we can assure you, so we&#8217;ve had to reconsider the options for making a tasty cocktail &#8211; purely for medicinal purposes, of course. Time for apothecary cocktails &#8211; in bulk.</p>
<p><a href="http://tmagazine.blogs.nytimes.com/2011/01/04/a-hilltop-apothecary-1022-south/" target="_blank">Apothecary cocktails</a> are based on the herbal concoctions popular at one time in the 19th century. Purported to cure everything from baldness to cancer, these bottled wonders generally proved to be little more than alcohol and a few herbs and sugar &#8211; basically, bottled cocktails. Poured over ice, they might&#8217;ve been a perfect sipper to enjoy on the porch at the end of a weary day.</p>
<p>Our <b>Calendula Cure-All</b> will certainly provide relief for whatever ails you. Chock full of a<a href="http://mountainroseblog.com/healing-calendula/" target="_blank">nti-inflammatories from calendula </a>and mint, and a<a href="http://botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/j/junipe11.html" target="_blank">ntibacterial properties from juniper berries</a>, which are used liberally in the making of gin, we feel certain that this is one bottle of medicine that you will always want to keep on hand&#8230; just in case of emergency, of course.</p>
<p><b>Calendula Cure-All</b></p>
<p><i>Marigolds, also known as calendula, are a common flower in most gardens, making them a perfect ingredient for use in cocktails. Both the leaves and the flowers can be used, dried or fresh, and the petals impart a lovely saffron color. This Cure-All can be made in advance, bottled, and refrigerated for up two weeks, allowing you to pour yourself a tot whenever you feel a bit weak.</i></p>
<p>1 cup fresh marigold flower heads<br />
1/2 cup fresh mint leaves<br />
Quarter cup fresh marigold leaves<br />
2 cups white wine <i>(try a nice local Chardonnay)</i><br />
3/4 cup gin <i>(we like <a href="http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/products/grain-spirits/87-watershed" target="_blank">Catoctin Creek</a>)</i><br />
1/2 cup limoncello <i>(our favorite is <a href="http://www.donciccioefigli.com/verify.php?redirect=/index.php" target="_blank">Don Ciccio &amp; Figgli</a>)</i><br />
1/8 cup lavender honey</p>
<p>Put all ingredients into an empty wine bottle and mix thoroughly. Cork and place in refrigerator to chill for two hours before serving. May be served over ice with a garnish of fresh lemon.</p>

Mothers everywhere are steeling themselves for an onslaught of sappy <a href="http://www.hallmark.com/" target="_blank">Hallmark cards</a>, flowers stuffed into coffee mugs emblazoned with <a href="http://www.freeprintablecertificates.net/showcover/world_best_mom_certificate_heart" target="_blank">“World’s Best Mom”</a>, and crowded brunch buffets. It’s the thought that counts.</p>
<p>Motherhood is no easy gig, and whether the nurturing woman in your life has been a mother, a grandmother, an aunt, a sister, or a family friend, it is nice to thank her for her contribution to your existence. What she probably needs is a stiff drink, but, like any true maternal figure, she doesn’t want to be too obvious about it. The <b>Mother’s Little Helper</b> is an excellent way to add a special kick to any drink, in the guise of a booze-filled fruity ice cube. She can add it discreetly to a glass of seltzer water or enjoy it with a proper glass of bubbly. Have a toast in her honor and <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=hGXeAaI4IdU" target="_blank">give her a call</a> — she’s always there, ready to offer advice and blushingly brush off your words of gratitude. Happy Mother’s Day!</p>
<p><b>Mother’s Little Helper</b></p>
<p>A nice light spirit adds the right note to these cute little cubes. Vodka tends to have a crisp taste while gin provides a slightly herbaceous undertone, so either lends itself well to the strawberries. As always, we suggest you support your local distillers, which are seemingly popping up everywhere these days. We enjoy <a href="http://www.smoothambler.com/category/products/" target="_blank">Smooth Ambler</a> vodka and <a href="http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/products/grain-spirits/87-watershed" target="_blank">Catoctin Creek</a> gin — local and flavorful!</p>
<p>1 cup frozen strawberries</p>
<p>1/4 cup vodka or gin</p>
<p>1 tablespoon granulated sugar</p>
<p>Champagne or sparkling wine</p>
<p>Mint sprig, for garnish</p>
<p>Place strawberries in a blender and roughly chop, then add vodka or gin and sugar. Blend together on high until smooth (you can strain through a fine-mesh sieve to remove the seeds if you want, but this is entirely optional); pour into ice cube tray (a silicone ice cube tray comes in handy here) and freeze until solid, about 3 hours. Will keep in the freezer for up to 6 months at this point. Yield: about 6 cubes.</p>
<p>Put a cube in a glass of chilled champagne, garnish with mint, and kiss that special woman on the cheek.</p>

<p>We&#8217;re spicing things up, Boozers. An interesting ingredient recently came our way and we simply couldn&#8217;t resist the idea of incorporating it into a cocktail: <a href="http://herbtherapies.wordpress.com/herb-of-the-week-hawthorn/herb-of-the-week/" target="_blank">turmeric</a>. To be precise, fresh turmeric root, which looks a bit like a fingerling potato until you cut it open to reveal its bright marigold interior and get hit with its lovely fresh scent, which has a certain earthy ginger quality.</p>
<p>What we did with it was to make a turmeric juice, purported to have <a href="http://www.huffingtonpost.com/andrew-weil-md/turmeric-health-have-a-happy-new-year_b_798328.html" target="_blank">amazing health benefits</a> for people with arthritis or diabetes, among many other ailments. While fresh turmeric is best for this recipe <em>(and can be found at many ethnic markets, so we suggest a road trip)</em>, we&#8217;ve also included a way to make it with ground turmeric powder, which is readily available at any grocery store. Because turmeric has a strong flavor, we decided to turn up the volume when creating our <strong>Masala Moonshine</strong> — this is no time to be shy. Instead, we included the flavors of lime, bitter orange, fresh mint, and a healthy dose of <a href="http://www.whiskyadvocateblog.com/2012/03/13/white-whiskey-bottled-before-its-time-or-the-equivalent-of-an-unaged-rum-or-tequila/" target="_blank">unaged whiskey</a>, or moonshine, to create a cocktail that really packs a punch. And, if you&#8217;re getting ready for <a href="http://www.history.com/topics/cinco-de-mayo" target="_blank">Cinco de Mayo</a>, you can easily turn this into a <strong>Masala Margarita</strong> by <a href="http://www.foodrepublic.com/2013/02/19/hecho-america-8-tequila-brands-owned-americans" target="_blank">substituting tequila</a> for the moonshine. Go global.</p>
<p><strong>Masala Moonshine</strong></p>
<p><em>As our dear Boozers know, we love to use a flavored ice cube to shake things up — what better way to add a new layer of flavor to a drink than with an ice cube that deepens the essence of the cocktail as it melts into the glass? For this particular recipe, we made a lavender honey and ginger cube for an added kick of spice.</em></p>
<p>2 ounces fresh turmeric juice <em>(recipe below)</em></p>
<p>2 ounces unaged whiskey <em>(we used <a href="http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/products/grain-spirits/mosby" target="_blank">Catoctin Creek&#8217;s Mosby&#8217;s Spirits</a>)</em></p>
<p>1/2 ounce Triple Sec</p>
<p>2 teaspoons fresh lime juice</p>
<p>2 ounces chilled club soda</p>
<p>several fresh mint leaves</p>
<p>wedge of fresh lime and fresh mint for garnish</p>
<p>3 &#8211; 4 honey-ginger ice cubes <em>(recipe below)</em></p>
<p>Put first four ingredients in a cocktail shaker and shake vigorously. Place mint leaves in bottom of a tall glass, lightly bruising, and add honey-ginger cubes. Pour turmeric juice-whiskey blend into glass, top with chilled club soda, and stir thoroughly with a bar spoon. Garnish with fresh lime and mint.</p>
<p><strong><em>Turmeric Juice:</em></strong></p>
<p>Peel several small turmeric root* and place into a small saucepan. Cover with cold water and bring to a simmer over low heat. Allow to simmer for about 30 minutes or until turmeric is soft and liquid has reduced by about half. Remove from heat and allow to cool. Put the turmeric and liquid into a blender, add 1 cup cold water and 1/4 cup light agave nectar. Blend on high until completely liquified. Add more sweetener to taste. Strain liquid several times through a sieve until you get a smooth liquid. Can be refrigerated for up to two weeks.</p>
<p><em><strong>* note:</strong> if you can&#8217;t find fresh turmeric root, you can create a similar liquid by substituting two tablespoons of ground turmeric for the fresh ingredient — add the first tablespoon and mix up the liquid, then add the remaining tablespoon a little at a time until you get a flavor that is gingery but not overpowering.</em></p>
<p><em><strong>Honey-ginger cubes</strong></em></p>
<p>1/4 cup freshly grated ginger</p>
<p>2 tablespoons lavender honey (or sweetener of your choice)</p>
<p>1/2 cup hot water</p>
<p>1/2 cup cold water</p>
<p>Mix first three ingredients together in a small bowl until well-blended, then add cold water and blend again. Pour into ice cube tray and freeze until solid.</p>

No matter, we like to go with the flow, and we&#8217;ll explore the turmeric next week &#8211; so consider yourselves warned. But a boatload of carrots brought us back to one of our favorite Tipples: the Carrot Top.</p>
<p>Carrots make a perfect base for a cocktail, especially in the spring. They have a lovely fresh sweetness and can be infused quickly into a variety of liquors. The color is gorgeous also, so you end up with a cocktail that just makes you happy. And at the end of a long week, what else really matters?</p>
<p><b>Carrot Top&#8230; Revisited</b></p>
<p><i>Our first exploration into<a href="http://goodbooze.wordpress.com/2012/03/02/the-friday-tipple-carrot-top/" target="_blank"> carrot-infused liquor</a> centered on rye whiskey, but it works equally well with vodka (as  discovered by <a href="http://boozedandinfused.com/2012/04/11/carrot-vodka/" target="_blank">Boozed+Infused</a>), and we&#8217;ve chosen today to match it with a sunny gin from <a href="http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/products/grain-spirits" target="_blank">Catoctin Creek Distilling Company.</a> Yes, you really can do a quick infusion in just a couple of hours &#8211; we think it creates a really fresh flavor, as the gin is just kissed by the carrots, giving it a lighter, less earthy, quality.</i></p>
<p><i>to make the infused gin:</i></p>
<p>1 fresh carrot, grated</p>
<p>1/2 cup gin</p>
<p>1-inch chunk fresh ginger</p>
<p>1 teaspoon lavender honey</p>
<p>Place all ingredients in a jar and stir well. Cover and set aside for a couple of hours, then strain. Will keep for up to weeks.</p>
<p><i>to make a lovely and refreshing cocktail:</i></p>
<p>2 ounces carrot-infused gin</p>
<p>1 ounce <a href="http://www.amazon.com/Ginger-People-Juice/dp/B000SEKSKU" target="_blank">ginger juice</a> (<i>often found at health food stores)</i></p>
<p>2 ounces chilled tonic water</p>
<p>wedge of fresh lemon</p>
<p>Put first three ingredients in a tall glass filled with ice, stir briskly, and garnish with lemon.</p>

<p>After we&#8217;ve had our morning coffee, a beer may be in order as we try to absorb the news of the day. For us, it may be the satisfying fizz of our local DC Brau&#8217;s aptly-named The Citizen; in Connecticut, the choice might be Thomas Hooker&#8217;s Liberator Doppelbock, while Texans might reach for Namaste Brewing&#8217;s Post Colonial IPA. Whether you are in Boston, or Aurora, or Oklahoma City, or the south side of Chicago, this is a time to celebrate our communities, embracing our differences without passing judgement.</p>

<p>We&#8217;re feeling crafty, Boozers. What with the upsurge of interest in <a href="http://www.foodandwine.com/articles/barrel-aged-cocktails" target="_blank">barrel-aged cocktails</a> and <a href="http://www.washingtonpost.com/blogs/going-out-guide/wp/2013/04/04/this-thing-you-should-drink-gin-and-tonic-on-tap-at-union-markets-red-apron-butchery/" target="_blank">gin-and-tonics on tap</a>, we began to yearn for a ready-made cocktail of our own. What could be nicer after wearily trudging home from a long week at the cube than being able to open up the fridge and find a tasty infused cocktail just waiting to be consumed?</p>
<p>Because we like to mix practicality into our cocktails, a mason jar seems to be a perfect vessel for both crafting and imbibing — no fuss, no muss.<strong> </strong>Our<strong> DIY Craft Cocktail</strong> can be set up before you leave for work and all you have to do is twist off the lid when you get home, add a few ice cubes, and drink up, straight out of the jar. Put together several jars and invite some friends over, or line them up next to the La-Z-Boy while you <a href="http://www.cnn.com/2013/02/06/opinion/riccio-binge-tv-watching" target="_blank">binge-watch</a> &#8221;The Office&#8221;. It&#8217;s a Friday night made in heaven.</p>
<p><strong>DIY Craft Cocktail</strong></p>
<p><em>This drink is a model of infusion — by putting all the ingredients, including the mixer, into the jar, you end up with a cocktail where the flavors have begun to meld together, but the shorter infusion time allows for some of the specific characteristics to remain freshly distinct. Whatever. It tastes good. Drink up.</em></p>
<p>2 ounces gin <em>(our local <a href="http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/products/grain-spirits/watershed" target="_blank">Catoctin Creek Watershed Gin</a> or <a href="http://greenhatgin.com/" target="_blank">Green Hat Gin</a> are generally at the top of our list, but go local wherever you are, of course)</em></p>
<p>1 ounce freshly-squeezed grapefruit juice</p>
<p>2 ounces club soda</p>
<p>2 wedges fresh grapefruit</p>
<p>1 &#8211; 2 tablespoons orange blossom honey<em> (adjust to your taste)</em></p>
<p>1/2 teaspoon freshly grated ginger</p>
<p>1 sprig of fresh thyme <em>(optional, but nice if you have it)</em></p>
<p>1 <a href="http://botanical.com/botanical/mgmh/q/quassi01.html" target="_blank">quassia chip</a> <em>(also 0ptional &#8212; we keep them on hand for making bitters &#8212; otherwise, just add a couple of dashes of your favorite bitters)</em></p>
<p>Place all ingredients into a 12-ounce mason jar, stir vigorously, and then put the lid on tightly. Put in the refrigerator for at least 8 hours or overnight. To drink, remove the lid, fish out the quassia chip <em>(and grapefruit wedges, if you wish)</em>, stir well, add a few ice cubes, and enjoy.</p>

<p>It&#8217;s Spring Break somewhere, dear Boozers. Whether you’re lucky enough to be vacationing in Florida, the land of the <a href="http://myfloridaspecialtyplate.com/endless-summer.html" target="_blank">endless summer</a> or simply turning up the heat and walking around the rumpus room in a bikini in your basement in Minnesota, there&#8217;s never a bad time to enjoy a tasty libation as the sun sets in the western sky.</p>
<p>In the old days, this concoction was likely a <a href="http://www.foodnetwork.com/recipes/alton-brown/tequila-sunrise-recipe/index.html" target="_blank">Tequila Sunrise</a>, as Floridians like their citrus liberally laced with alcohol, but it seems somehow backwards to drink a sunrise-themed drink at the end of the day. Hence, the <strong>Banana River Sunset</strong>, a cocktail that pays homage to last rays of the day as they stretch out across <a href="http://www.city-data.com/picfilesc/picc13516.php" target="_blank">one of the Sunshine State’s prettiest lagoons</a>, home to manatees and dolphins and the occasional ‘gator. It’s a drink that’s lightly bitter at the start with a sweet finish, a perfect way to end the day in the subtropics — or Minnesota. Dive in.</p>
<p><strong>Banana River Sunset</strong></p>
<p><em>This drink packs a lot of citrus punch, from orange blossom honey to a <a href="http://goodbooze.wordpress.com/2012/03/23/the-friday-tipple-bikini-shot/" target="_blank">gin-laced grapefruit granita</a>. Squeeze the orange juice fresh if you can, as it will become laced with fresh oils from the rind, which enhances the bitterness of the Campari.</em></p>
<p>1 teaspoon orange blossom honey</p>
<p>5 or 6 pineapple sage leaves <em>(you can substitute fresh mint or basil)</em></p>
<p>2 large tablespoons <a href="http://goodbooze.wordpress.com/2012/03/23/the-friday-tipple-bikini-shot/" target="_blank">grapefruit-gin granita</a></p>
<p>3 ounces freshly-squeezed orange juice</p>
<p>1 ounce <a href="http://www.campari.com/" target="_blank">Campari</a></p>
<p>Pour the honey in the bottom of a tall chilled glass. Muddle the pineapple sage leaves into the honey until lightly crushed, then add the grapefruit-gin granita on top. Quickly shake the orange juice in a cocktail shaker filled with ice and strain into the glass. Float the Campari over the juice and enjoy.</p>

The Justices have packed up <a href="http://www.politico.com/news/stories/0609/23317_Page2.html" target="_blank">their robes</a> for the weekend and it&#8217;s time for a wee drink. Or perhaps two — holding the scales of justice is a tough job. Time for a martini.</p>
<p>A martini is a perfect marriage of just a few essential elements, like any relationship. For some, a <a href="http://www.askmen.com/fine_living/majumdar_400/426_martini-recipe-and-guide.html" target="_blank">true martini</a> can be made only with gin, while others eschew anything but vodka. Shaken or stirred, an olive or a twist of lemon — these are all a matter of opinion. We don&#8217;t judge, we just mix. That&#8217;s what we call <strong>Equalitini</strong>.</p>
<p><strong>Equalitini</strong></p>
<p><em>Unlike <a href="http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/California_Proposition_8" target="_blank">Prop 8</a>, V8 believes in the concept of <a href="http://www.greatseal.com/mottoes/unum.html" target="_blank"><em>E pluribus unum</em></a>: out of many, one. This tasty little vegetable juice adds a spring-like depth to this cocktail, but it&#8217;s the chunk of fresh <a href="http://www.horseradish.org/history.html" target="_blank">horseradish</a> — a root that is readily available in most grocery stores during this Passover season — that gives it a real kick in the pants. </em></p>
<p>2 ounces gin or vodka <em>(we used <a href="http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/products/grain-spirits/87-watershed" target="_blank">Catoctin Creek&#8217;s Watershed Gin</a>, but we firmly support your right to choose any liquor you prefer)</em></p>
<p>1 ounce <a href="http://www.v8juice.com/" target="_blank">V8</a> or other vegetable juice</p>
<p>1-inch chunk of fresh horseradish, peeled</p>
<p>splash of vermouth</p>
<p>two strips of paper-thin fresh horseradish, for garnish</p>
<p>Put all ingredients into a cocktail shaker with several cubes of ice. Shake vigorously then strain into a chilled martini glass. Garnish with strips of horseradish.</p>

<p>Bathing suit season is on the horizon, Boozers. Buxom babes are overtaking<a href="http://www.businessinsider.com/sports-illustrated-swimsuit-issue-history-2012-2" target="_blank"> magazine covers</a>, glowing with cocoa butter on far-flung tropical beaches. Whether you hope to be a buxom babe or merely to attract a buxom babe, the approach of <a href="http://www.bsccomment.com/sports/top-ten-spring-break-party-movies-1.2234105" target="_blank">Spring Break</a> prompts us to ponder the winter flab so cleverly hidden by chunky sweaters. It’s time to detox.</p>
<p>While we could consider exercising a little more — or at all — we prefer to go the route of a desperate last-minute liquid diet in order to shed those unwanted pounds. Protein shakes, <a href="http://iowagirleats.com/2012/01/04/my-top-secret-diet-weapon/" target="_blank">spinach smoothies</a>, and lemon juice spiked with cayenne are all on the menu, but as happy hour approaches, we feel the need for a little special cocktail to reward ourselves for all that self-denial.</p>
<p>Our detox drink of choice is our <strong>Bikini Shot</strong> — combining the health benefits of <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=p01KHML9FCM" target="_blank">kiwi fruit</a>, laden with vitamin C and E and colon-cleansing dietary fiber, with a vodka-laced grapefruit granita. It starts off tart and cold and ends up sweet and smooth, not unlike easing yourself into a pool. The <strong>Bikini Shot</strong> may not actually make that saggy old Speedo fit any better, but it sure will make you feel like a million bucks. Go ahead — hit the beach. <em>Hang ten!</em></p>
<p><strong>Bikini Shot</strong></p>
<p><em>A <a href="http://www.npr.org/templates/story/story.php?storyId=12030425" target="_blank">granita</a> is similar in texture to a shaved ice, made with fresh fruit juice, sugar, and, in this case, alcohol. We used<a href="http://www.squareoneorganicspirits.com/SQ1_VODKA/SQ1VODKA_organicVodka.html" target="_blank"> Square One Cucumber Vodka</a> for this recipe, as the cucumber essence adds a fresh note to the grapefruit, but it would work beautifully with gin. We’ve also had success with a blackberry granita made with <a href="http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/products/mosbys" target="_blank">Catoctin Creek’s Mosby’s Spirit</a>, which has a certain grappa-like quality that makes us feel like we are vacationing on the <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=8CCVXMLzGeE" target="_blank">Amalfi coast</a>.</em></p>
<p>One whole grapefruit, juiced and retaining some of the pulp</p>
<p>3 ounces vodka or gin</p>
<p>2 ripe kiwi fruits, peeled and cut into chunks</p>
<p>1 orange, juiced</p>
<p>1 teaspoon light agave nectar</p>
<p><em>To make the granita:</em> combine the grapefruit juice, pulp, and vodka or gin and pour into a shallow freezer-safe dish (like a pie pan). Place uncovered in the freezer for an hour, then scrape with a spoon to loosen the ice crystals. Return to the freezer for another hour. It can be scraped into a freezer-safe container at this point and kept in the freezer until ready to use.</p>
<p><em>To make the kiwi fruit juice:</em> Put kiwi, orange juice, and agave nectar in a blender and blend until smooth. Strain through a sieve to remove seeds (optional). Chill for 30 minutes.</p>
<p>Pour two ounces kiwi juice into a shot glass or aperitif glass; top with a spoonful of grapefruit granita. Enjoy.</p>

<p>The Ides of March is upon us, dear Boozers. Historically speaking, it marks the day that Caesar was assassinated — <a href="http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=-_WJBBWFTns" target="_blank">&#8220;Et tu, Brute?&#8221;</a> — although the term &#8220;Ides&#8221; simply refers to either the <a href="http://www.infoplease.com/spot/ides1.html" target="_blank">13th or the 15th day</a> of the month, as the Romans couldn&#8217;t make anything simple. We like to use this day to lift a glass <a href="http://flycooking.wordpress.com/2010/03/15/a-sisterhood-of-margaritas/" target="_blank">in memory of friends and loved ones</a> — and as our dear ones all seem to have had a penchant for margaritas, that most communal of libations — we are celebrating today with a <strong>Margarita Memory</strong>.</p>
<p>A margarita is really a classic blend of sweet and sour, to which we like to add notes of spice — creating a perfect representation of a life well-lived. It can be made with a variety of citrus, from traditional lime to blood oranges, mandarins, and grapefruit, and its flavor can be subtly altered by <a href="http://www.tequila.net/faqs/tequila/types-of-tequila-classifications.html" target="_blank">the type of tequila</a> you use — blanco, mixto, reposado, and so forth — or you could even substitute with an unaged whiskey <em>(we&#8217;ve done this often with <a href="http://catoctincreekdistilling.com/products/grain-spirits" target="_blank">Catoctin Creek&#8217;s Mosby&#8217;s Spirit</a> with excellent *hic* results)</em> or even a smoky <a href="http://drinks.seriouseats.com/2012/05/all-about-mezcal-what-is-mezcal-worm-tequila-history-production-sombra-illegal-del-maguey-best-mezcal.html" target="_blank">mezcal</a>. Most importantly, to make a <strong>Margarita Memory</strong> really sing, choose ingredients that really reflect the person you are remembering — sweet, smooth, fresh, rich, perky, snarky, optimistic — and then savor every drop.</p>
<p><strong>Margarita Memory</strong></p>
<p><em>Our version today contains some muddled peach and a blend of lime and orange juice, because it reminds us of happy days drinking margaritas on the beach with special people. We added a pink peppercorn syrup to pack a bit of punch  — because peaches are not in season now, we actually used the syrup from canned peaches as our base.</em></p>
<p>2 ounces silver tequila</p>
<p>1 ounce Cointreau</p>
<p>1/2 ounce Amaretto</p>
<p>2 ounces fresh lime and orange juice</p>
<p>Slice or two of peach <em>(canned is fine if peaches are out of season)</em></p>
<p>1 tablespoon pink peppercorn syrup, or to taste <em>(recipe below)</em></p>
<p>dash of citrus bitters <em>(such as </em><a href="http://www.urbanmoonshine.com/citrus-bitters.html" target="_blank"><em>Urban Moonshine</em></a><em> or even </em><a href="http://www.inthecupboard.com/2012/09/05/bitter-end-thai-bitters-spicy-citrus-bitters/" target="_blank"><em>Bitter Ends Thai Bitters</em></a><em>)</em></p>
<p>Wedge of lime or other citrus for garnish</p>
<p>Muddle a couple of slices of peach in the bottom of a cocktail shaker. Add tequila, cointreau, citrus juices, syrup, and bitters; add a few ice cubes and shake vigorously. Strain into a margarita glass <em>(salt optional)</em> filled with ice and float a little Amaretto over the top. Garnish with lime and serve immediately.</p>
<p><strong>To make pink peppercorn syrup:</strong> Strain syrup from canned peaches into a small saucepan. Add 2 tablespoons of whole pink peppercorns and simmer over very low heat for about 30 minutes. Cool completely, then strain and store in the refrigerator for up to two weeks.</p>
